There’s a lot to come from Ell Ivy next year and the best part is that we don’t have to wait that long as 2020 is coming up fast. Thankfully though, we can take in this nostalgic daydreamer’s debut single while we patiently wait for the rest of her lyrical mind to unfold before us. We talked about the debut, the realists in her life, and more in this back and forth between a couple of girls who like to soar as close to the sun as they can.
Kendra: The overall running theme of who you are and what you’re about is dreams and being a dreamer. Have you been like that since you were a child? Always daydreaming and whatnot about what could be?
Ell Ivy: Yes definitely, I always used to get into trouble at school for daydreaming. It’s always been something that gets me through a day, I spend a lot of time in my head!
Kendra: The TV series Modern Family has this great line about dreamers and realists that goes, “The dreamers need the realists to keep them from soaring too close to the sun. And the realists? Well, without the dreamers, they might not ever get off the ground.” Do you have a realist in your life who helps keep you a little grounded or are you okay reaching the sun?
Ell Ivy: I do very much agree with that! I do have a couple of realists that try to keep me from soaring too close, but sometimes you gotta just do it anyway and learn for yourself.
Kendra: Sticking with dreams a bit more because your latest single is “Still Dreaming.” Where were you mentally when you penned this and do you always write best when in that particular state of mind?
Ell Ivy: I was actually in a very good place at the time I wrote this. I was writing from a place of nostalgia and truth. I write best when I’m looking back at something. I can’t write about a situation I’m currently in, it’s too close at the time but give it a month or two and a song will pop up out of the blue.
Kendra: I’m sure you have a notebook full of lyrical content, what was it about “Still Dreaming” that made it stand out as your debut single?
Ell Ivy: It was the way it made me feel every time I played it. It’s very close to my heart because it was the one song that made me feel like I might be okay at this whole writing thing! It’s a very honest song.
Kendra: Will we hear more from you before the year is up or will we have to wait until 2020?
Ell Ivy: Yes, there is one more song for 2019, but that’s all I can say!
Kendra: Lastly what’s going on with you as we roll out of 2019 and into 2020?
Ell Ivy: A lot of writing and planning for the next stage, and a few gigs in London as well. I’m very much looking forward to what 2020 will bring!
