Last week we spoke to an artist who felt the buzz of the UK music scene and moved there from the Pacific Northwest, and this week we’ve got a songstress who already called it home; Ananya. The “Happy” singer sat down with us to discuss if there was something really in the water across the pond or if it’s just a coincidence so much goodness is erupting in the UK right now, as well as more about her latest singles, empathy in music, and more in this back-and-forth exchange.
Kendra: There has to be something in the water over in the UK right now because you’re the second artist this month I’ve encountered who has what Simon Cowell called the “it factor.” While it’s very apparent now, when did you start to notice your musical abilities?
Ananya: Thank you, that’s so kind of you. I truly realized the significance of music when I understood that creating music transports me to another world. Making music feels like soul food to me, and that was the clearest sign that I was exactly where I needed to be.
Kendra: I got lost in your 2023 release, ‘i woke up one night.’ It’s just such a good record and in listening, I couldn’t help but notice that perhaps “I’m Too Nice” from that album was the companion to your latest single, “Happy.” In one you obviously can’t say something because you’re a sweet person and in “Happy” you don’t want to tell someone you’re smiling more without them. Has empathy always moved you when it comes to songwriting?
Ananya: Thank you! Definitely – empathy moves me day to day, and I believe that reflects in my songwriting. Being empathetic is a beautiful gift, though it can be emotionally exhausting at times. I’m grateful for it because it enables me to absorb emotions and think twice before acting upon them. It adds a layer of self-awareness and understanding that enriches my creative process.
Kendra: But to get real for a second, how soon after a breakup do you personally know it was for the best?
Ananya: It really depends on the relationship and how the breakup unfolded. Sometimes, you can sense it’s for the best before the breakup even happens, other times it’s taken months. Healing takes time!
Kendra: Maybe not too nice though because before “Happy” you dropped “Emotions”, which, this song has such a great chorus. It’s been in my head all day! You note it in the song, but how freeing is it to write a revenge anthem?
Ananya: To me, “Emotions” doesn’t really feel like a revenge anthem, but more of a reflection on healing and the process of overcoming a difficult situation. Writing about it definitely felt liberating, as it captured the sense of freedom that comes with personal growth and moving forward.
Kendra: Again, the UK is really bringing a great deal of musical talent right now. As someone with their feet on the ground there, where’s the best place to see new artists in London?
Ananya: You see a lot of creatives in areas like Camden and Shoreditch, and Sofar Sounds always hosts cool shows with up-and-coming artists. It’s a great way to discover fresh talent.
Kendra: Along with music, you’re also a fashion designer. People like to believe artists branding themselves is a new thing but having a signature look has always been what made artists stick out; Madonna’s cone, Michael’s glove, and Left Eye’s band-aid. With that, who are some of your style icons that happen to also make music?
Ananya: Madonna, Grace Jones, Jane Birkin.
Kendra: Time for a side note – What song would you say you’re more thankful for as a fan of music?
Ananya: “Both Sides Now” by Joni Mitchell.
Kendra: Lastly, with “Happy” out now, what are your plans as we head into the winter months and soon, 2025?
Ananya: I’ve been busy creating more music, so I guess 2025 leaves space to share it.
