When it comes to college, it’s a whole new world as new layers are added to an already hectic life. Classes, social lives, and more classes. It can all be too much but for Peyton, this dynamo managed to balance all of the above and a career in music. Now she’s ready for the world to embrace her fully with her debut album, ‘PSA,’ out July 23rd. We talked about the album, how she spent the past year, and then some in this back and forth exchange.
Kendra:: A few years ago you auditioned for UCLA. While you didn’t make the move then, is the idea of heading west still in your mind?
Peyton: I do enjoy LA and wouldn’t mind staying there for a bit. My heart is in Houston, TX though.
Kendra: UCLA’s loss because you just graduated from Houston Baptist University in the last year. You managed to balance classes and your music, but now that school is over – have you felt a new layer of creativity come through you at all?
Peyton: When I graduated, I did have an explosive spark of creativity. However, that comes and goes. New experiences, taking creative breaks and living life is the best way to eventually spark genuine creativity. I do not pressure myself into feeling creative. I allow it to come to me.
Kendra: When you look back at ‘Peace in the Midst of a Storm’ compared to ‘PSA,’ how do you feel your artistry has grown?
Peyton: My creativity has always been there. My ideas are just more fleshed out and I was given the space to take my time and make it the best I could.
Kendra: You have this really ethereal feel to your music, especially in your latest single, “Let It Flow.” Now over the past year or so we’ve been hit as a society by A LOT. When it seemed like it couldn’t get any worse, what’s something you’d do aside from music that helped your mind flow with ease?
Peyton: Watch cartoons, hang out with friends, cook, and play little silly games like Among Us.
Kendra: The video for “Let It Flow” features horseback riding! Is that something you grew up doing?
Peyton: Whenever I was in my mother’s hometown I would do it but I hadn’t done it in 10 years so I was definitely intimidated. But once I hopped on, everything was fine.
Kendra: If you have a bucket list, you’re on a roll because so far you’ve had a critically acclaimed record and a song featured on the hit series ‘Insecure.’ Are you the type of person who has a definite list of goals they want to achieve or do you just let the days come as they may?
Peyton: I think it is important to know what you want out of life. I do write down and ask for what I want in my life and I am very specific with the things that I want. There are many things that have come to me without asking and I believe that is because overall I pray that I am put in the right direction.
Kendra: Lastly, it’s getting a little easier with the vaccine rollouts, but it’s still kind of hard to have a definite answer when it comes to future plans given the current state of everything, but as far as what you can control when it comes to your career and creativity – what do you have planned in the coming months for yourself?
Peyton: I plan on releasing more music, selling merch, performing a lot, and enjoying my life.
