While we love to sing along to the happier of tunes, we can’t help but sink our teeth into a great breakup song. I mean, where would be we without Kelly Clarkson’s “Since You’ve Been Gone?” Exactly. So many karaoke bars would be dismal without it. Well, we’re about to be saying the same thing about “Yours” by Lo Lo. With a sound that makes you think it’s already on the radio alongside Taylor Swift, Halsey and Charli XCX, “Yours” is a genuine pop song that was inspired by a breakup that came on one of the worst days. If you think getting dumped on Valentine’s Day is rough, try April Fools. Yup, that was Lo Lo’s reality and she’s spilling about that, what’s next and more.
Kendra: What flipped the switch in your life that made you go from singing around the house to wanting to pursue music?
Lo Lo: I actually always wanted to pursue music, but when I was little I dreamed to be on Broadway—I loved musical theatre. When I was in grade 9 I wrote my first song and fell in love with it. I knew I had to keep writing.
Kendra: We have to talk about the breakup. You had to think it was an April Fools joke, right?
Lo Lo: Haha oh yeah, I fully thought it was a joke. It was also completely out of nowhere. I did not see it was coming, nor did I believe him for the first few minutes of the breakup. Cringe.
Kendra: In hindsight, are you kind of thankful that they dumped you because from it you got this great pop song?
Lo Lo: Hell yes! I was originally going to put out another song as my first single, but I’m so glad I was able to make this one. The second after I wrote it, I knew it was special. It was a shitty situation, but it did make for some great songwriting material.
Kendra: Again, great song. It sounds radio-ready. Was it just you writing and recording?
Lo Lo: I work with a team of producers, mixers, etc, who help my songs come together, in terms of production and recording. These two guys, Giordon and Ben, are my producers and best friends. We’re an epic 3 pack.
Kendra: Also, when can we expect “Yours” to be on an EP or LP because we definitely need more…
Lo Lo: I can tell you that there will definitely be more released soon! Yours is just the start of a series of songs from the past year of my life.
Kendra: Back to “Yours”, it’s about what I think we all feel during a breakup; lost. Other than penning a song, what is your best advice for finding one’s self after a bad breakup?
Lo Lo: Firstly, I think it’s good to recognize that you’re obviously going to be sad for a while— and that’s okay! Change, whether it’s good or bad, is always hard to adjust to. My advice would be to surround yourself with people that love you, like your best friends and your family. They’ll help you get through it. Also, distract yourself in ways that will benefit you. Find a new hobby, or book a trip to go somewhere fun and exciting. Kiss a stranger!! Do things for yourself, and you’ll find yourself again.
Kendra: Other than more music, what’s going on with you in the coming months?
Lo Lo: I’m hoping to do some traveling to write with different people from all over and work on some more opportunities! This summer I’m gonna focus on getting the rest of my music ready, and hopefully get some chances to go up north for some cottage life.
