There are a lot of mysteries that come with life. Like the reality of Area 51, how many Costco samples are too much, what exactly is yacht rap, and is the “GOLDEN FL OG SEASON PA$$” real? Okay, so those last two are only wondered if you’ve ever talked to one-half of the pair that make up Hurricane Party. Which is what we did when we got to know a little more about the yacht rap duo, their new album Juice, and more from their own Jacques Bruna.
Kendra: In June you headed overseas for a European tour. Was that your first time playing there or had you been there, done that, gotten accustomed to what to expect there?
Jacques Bruna: Oh yeah we were ready! We headed to the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Switzerland + Germany. It was our second time as Hurricane Party but we’d gone countless times on our own. We pretty much stick to Florida and central Europe…it’s our thing. We know EXACTLY what to expect. Intense smoke-filled rooms, amazing sound systems, ungodly amounts of alcohol, and unruly dance parties.
Kendra: I have to admit, yacht rap was not what I expected it to be. Do you think people often have this idea of what the genre entails and then are surprised when they hear you guys?
Jacques Bruna: Totally, the beauty of today is that you can just completely make something up on the internet and it will become a reality. Yacht rap chose us.
Kendra: When it comes to your upcoming debut LP, Juice, what three flavors do you feel best represent what fans can expect when they press play on this record?
Jacques Bruna: Oh shit! Margarita, Piña Colada, Rum Runner. All with hella fruit, umbrellas, and 151 floaters.
Kendra: Let’s talk about that “Pamplemousse” video. Visually it’s this trippy ride that harkens back to the ’80s and early ’90s in terms of animation style. Did you just give Shawn Johnson the reins on this one?
Jacques Bruna: Absolutely, we found Shawn through some mutual friends and were blown away by his style. We gave him a few dark and weird ideas and he just ran with it. Our very first conversation started with me saying “Um…ok how religious are you??”
Kendra: Being Florida-based and having a song like “Rollercoaster,” it’s gotta be asked…what theme parks do you feel would welcome your sound the best and why?
Jacques Bruna: We each have our own “GOLDEN FL OG SEASON PA$$” which gets us in the door and to the front of every line at any theme park in the state. We got really blazed at the governor’s mansion and he bestowed them upon us after we blew the speakers at one of his infamous house parties. They usually get us out of jail too…
Kendra: Any plans coming together after all the summer touring is over and done with?
Jacques Bruna: We’re starting to talk about new music…but, for now, we’re just gonna push the album. We have a few more videos coming down the pipeline and we’ll be touring up to North Carolina and out to New Orleans. We’re also gonna chill pretty hard though.
