Rewind a decade or so and Kristyn was spending her time going to any and every concert she could. There she dabbled a bit with concert photography but a love for it never really stuck. Thinking back and looking at her current life as a sessions photographer she notes, “My passion for photography lies more in quiet moments and natural, soft light. Concert photographers are insanely talented, but I’ll stick to being a spectator for now!”
One look at her work and you would guess that she’s been doing it for years but in fact, she just started Kristyn B Photography last year thanks to a four-legged friend. Shooting couples in and around the San Diego area and delivering stunning mementos to cherish for the rest of their days, it was a pleasure to find out what’s next as Kristyn continues to grow and learn with her business.
Kendra: When did your interest in photography start and when did you realize that it was time to take the next step and make it more than a hobby?
Kristyn B: The funny story is that my interest in photography started with my dogs! My oldest dog, Scout, has a video go viral and his Instagram count skyrocketed. I wanted to start to take better pictures for all the newfound followers. I got my first camera in March 2017! It was a hobby until May of 2018 when I decided people were easier to photograph than dogs and launched my business!

Kendra: You deal a lot with engagement photos. With that, many couples go for the traditional romantic shots. In other words, what are your thoughts on those who lean more towards quirky; cosplay, props, etc.
Kristyn B: I think an engagement session should encompass who the people are as a couple, and if that includes non-traditional aspects, they should go for it! This is your engagement, your day — it should be done the way you want it to!
Kendra: As a photographer, where in San Diego do you feel is the most romantic spot to shoot?
Kristyn B: Where my couple is most comfortable! My feeling is that feeling of romance comes from the connection between my clients, and so the most romantic location could be anywhere! It really just depends on the couple, their connection, and what’s important to them. For me, I love shooting up in the mountains just outside San Diego or in Nature Preserves around the city!

Kendra: Being that you’re engaged and have a wedding coming up, are the photos the thing you’re most nitpicky about?
Kristyn B: Actually, no! I get this question a lot. My photographer is a very good friend and mentor of mine. I trust her to work her magic and capture my day completely! I look up to her and her work greatly, and so I know I have no need to micromanage or nitpick. She is amazing!
Kendra: What steps are you taking with Kristyn B Photography in the coming year?
Kristyn B: I’m interning with a very successful, local wedding photographer this year to learn more about my craft and portfolio building! I hope to launch my wedding photography services by the end of 2019. I’ll also be participating in a few workshops, in addition to working to upgrade my gear!
