There’s a mixed CD in our car dedicated to theme songs that span the past three or four decades because if there’s one thing I love about television…it’s a sturdy theme song. So when I checked out what Teuteu had to offer, I was immediately drawn to his cover of a Saturday Morning staple of the ‘80s and heck, today. Of course, that’s where this conversation had to start but as themes came and went, in came chatter of his latest single and when to expect a delicious cocktail in EP formation.
Kendra: As someone who grew up with a little brother obsessed with TMNT, I have to say your cover was appreciated. Other than those green crime-fighting brothers, who were some of your early US inspirations when it came to sound?
Teuteu: I had to say that I love(d) the early ‘90s ‘Spider-Man’ cartoon, especially for the theme at the beginning of each episode! It made me feel so excited with this epic electric guitar solo and stuff!
Kendra: Also, are you working on more theme song covers of classic ‘80s/’90s toons? Perhaps, Teuteu’s Toon Tunes?
Teuteu: I didn’t plan to do another cartoon theme song but what a great idea! It will be amazing to do a Teuteu’s Toon Tunes EP, I would play ‘TMNT’ and ‘Hey Arnold!’ Maybe for the next Christmas.
Kendra: Let’s talk about “Soda Magique.” Where were you at in life when that song came to mind?
Teuteu: Great question thank you for asking! I was looking for a track that will mix a nice funky/disco vibe and offbeat french lyrics with (of course) a nice fat TalkBox solo. With this project I wanted to mix those things, but I didn’t get it totally until I wrote this track with my friend and bass player Gonzague. Now I’m finishing my first five tracks EP with this mindset, and I’m excited to release it this Spring.
Kendra: Within that song’s release, we got a lot of cocktail imagery. With that, if you had to compare your overall sound to a cocktail what would it be and why?
Teuteu: Such a cool question! Hmm, I think it will be a Moscow Mule; lemon juice for the funk, ginger beer for spicy chords, and vodka for this little madness.
Kendra: “Soda Magique” is set to be released on an EP, but when can fans expect to have their digital hands on that?
Teuteu: Yes, I’m so excited about that. Still a lot of work to do because I’m doing it all by myself! It will be available next spring.
Kendra: With talk of a new EP, will there also be some shows to play?
Teuteu: I will do some shows in Montréal! I’m lucky enough to collaborate with such good musicians that will be able to play along with me! I except to set a release party to celebrate the EP.
