It didn’t take long for Konstance to know where life was going to take her. By 12 she had her mind set on music, “I feel like I always knew I would be a performer.” Those instincts paid off as her family encouraged her to go for the gold, and it led her to not only reality TV competitions but also “My Heart.” It’s her latest single alongside Majeeed. We talked not only about her time on the small screen, but also about romance, multilingual music, and more in this back-and-forth exchange.
Kendra: You made it to being a finalist on ‘Nigerian Idol.’ Was that a show you had set your sights on since it began?
Konstance: Not really. I mean it’s a great show but I never really had my sights on it, but my family encouraged me to go on the show.
Kendra: Did that experience grant you any lessons you’ve been able to utilize outside of the show and for your career moving forward?
Konstance: The show taught me a lot about stage management and I’m forever grateful for that.
Kendra: Let’s talk about your latest, “My Heart.” A love song that has so many layers – one of them being that this is a multilingual track. When placing multiple languages in a song – do you go through and say well this part sounds better in Yoruba, and that should be in Pidgin – or is it more about what feels right with the melody and beat?
Konstance: Making a multilingual track is more about what feels right for me. I could switch the lyrics of the song to Yoruba and if I like it, it’s going to be in the song.
Kendra: And how was working alongside Majeeed on that? Were you familiar with one another before this musical connection?
Konstance: Working with Majeeed was really nice and encouraging. He’s a hard worker, and yes, I knew him before we made this song together.
Kendra: You noted that while “My Heart” is a love song, at 19 you’ve never been in love – yet. With that, is there a fictional couple from a TV show or movie whose love sort of inspires you when you sing this track?
Konstance: I watch a lot of movies so I can’t really pinpoint a particular fictional couple, but romantic movies did play a part for sure.
Kendra: Speaking of movies, it was announced that you are going to be making your acting debut in a short film directed by Idris Elba. You’ll also be acting alongside fellow singer, Seal. Did you approach the audition for that any differently than your audition for ‘Idol?’
Konstance: Yes I did, acting is quite different from singing so I did approach the audition differently.
Kendra: Time for a side note – With it being summer, I’d love to know – and for you to share – your favorite road trip song. Like, what’s the one song that has to be on your mix when you hit the road?
Konstance: It has to be the entire ‘Raves and Roses’ album by Rema, especially the track “Jo.” I love the album so much so it’ll definitely be on my road trip mix.
Kendra: Lastly, with “My Heart” out now, what are your plans as we start to roll into the fall?
Konstance: My EP is out now, so everyone get ready for the beautiful songs I’ll bless their ears with.
